From the narrow-gauge railway to the peaks

A panoramic adventure between Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes. On the narrow-gauge railway to Avramovo station, the highest railway station in the country, over Veliytsa peak and the village of Ortsevo, and back to Septemvri.

Some of the most wonderful panoramic views of Rila and Pirin await us, holding our attention with their beautiful peaks. The hike is suitable for beginner walkers and children.

Day by day

  1. Day 1: Veliytsa peak and the village of Ortsevo

    We meet the guide at Septemvri station at 8:30. You can reach the station by your own car or by train from Sofia or Plovdiv. From here we set off on the narrow-gauge railway to Avramovo station at 8:45; you may also come straight to Avramovo station by 11:30. From there we take to the forest. Along forest paths we head towards one of the most beautiful Rhodope villages, Ortsevo. Before we reach it, we climb Veliytsa peak (1712 m), the highest in the Veliytsa-Videnitsa section of the Rhodopes. At the summit stands a soldiers' memorial, raised in memory of the Bulgarian soldiers of the 27th Chepino and 39th Plovdiv infantry regiments, who fell on the first day of the Balkan War, 5 October 1912, for the liberation of the Bulgarians in the Rhodopes.

  2. Day 2: back on the narrow-gauge railway

    Morning breakfast, and we set off through the forests of the Rhodopes to Smolevo station, where we board the narrow-gauge railway and return to Septemvri station.
